What Causes Black Mold?
The mere presence of mold spores indoors is normal and expected. Consequently, it does not necessarily indicate that the environment is contaminated. Outdoors molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. According to the U.S. EPA, “It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust.” In fact, we probably
inhale spores with every breath we take because mold is a naturally-occurring substance that exists everywhere in the natural environment.
There are many types of mold which none of them will grow without water or moisture. So, it is important that you immediately find and repair all sources of water intrusion on your property. Failure to do so, will result in microbial growth; therefore, mold remediation company would be needed.
In most cases, having a full protocol report written by an Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP) prior to the mold removal process is ideal. Why?
As the homeowner this gives you 3 benefits:
1. What type of mold it is
2. Toxicity of the present mold (if any)
3. Full scope of work to remove and remediate mold from affected areas
It's crucial the IEP conducts a post remediation inspection for verification of the structures, systems, or contents have been returned to "condition 1". Check out our blog on the IICRC definition of mold "Conditions"
Mold is usually not a problem indoors. Unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot, then they begin growing. Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure may cause irritation in both mold-allergic and non-allergic people. Symptoms other than the allergic and irritant types are not commonly reported as a result of inhaling mold. Research on mold and health effects is ongoing.
Since this information provides a brief overview, it does not describe all potential health effects related to mold exposure. You may also wish to consult your state or local health department. For more information about mold and indoor air quality by visiting: www.epa.gov/mold
